Feature Business: Hudson Remodeling welcomes Stuart James back to the business

Hudson Remodeling’s newest face might look familiar to long-time customers of the Bellingham home remodeling company.

Stuart James, who worked as Hudson’s lead carpenter for 16 years, is back after five years away running his own home remodeling company in Bellingham. He returns to a team dedicated to designing and crafting the visions of homeowners throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties.

Charlie Hudson, who founded Hudson Remodeling in 1993 (and first hired Stuart back in 1996), is preparing for retirement. Remembering Stuart well as a stellar carpenter with a great eye for detail and a head for leadership, Hudson reached out to offer him the opportunity to rejoin the team and, eventually, assume an ownership role.

Now serving as project manager, Stuart oversees Hudson’s crews and subcontractors on each jobsite. He also helps manage the day-to-day operations of the business and is a point of contact for customers while assisting project manager and designer Susan Silva with estimating and bidding.

Hudson Remodeling, founded in Bellingham in 1993, won the Builder of the Year award from the Building Industry Association of Whatcom County in 2012. In addition, Hudson was BIAWC Remodeler of the year in 2003, 1999 and 1988. Other awards include Remodeler of the Year & Best Bath under $35,000, from BIAWC in 2007, and the Remodeling in Excellence Award, Kitchen over $60,000, from BIAWC in 2005. Along with owner Charlie Hudson, Stuart was a big component of those awards over the years.


Hudson is licensed and bonded in Washington state and has Certified Graduate Remodeler and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist designations from the National Association of Home Builders.

In the business world, it’s often mentioned just how critical a well-thought-out succession plan can be. Taking the time to plan ahead (think in terms of years, not months) helps ensure that the business will be in the best hands when it’s time for you to retire.
