Craigslist now requires employers to pay for recruitment ads in Bellingham, WA

If you are a job seeker or a small business owner in Whatcom County, you should know that Craigslist may have just rocked your world!

What Bellingham-area employers have used as a totally free recruitment tool for years became monetized on Nov. 1, 2016. Employers can no longer post free job ads on Bellingham Craigslist.

Some employers consider this bad news, but the change may actually be good news for job seekers. Adding a paid component has weeded out a ton of the scam posts that were previously found on Craigslist. It might actually be easier now for applicants to find your job opportunities.

For example, on Oct. 31, 2016 — before ads became a paid function — there were no fewer than 200 jobs posted on Bellingham Craigslist, and many appeared to be spam ads.

On Nov. 2, 2016 – after monetization took place — there were just over 60 jobs posted, and they appeared to be legitimate ads for real jobs near Bellingham. Again, this is great for job seekers who often were afraid to apply to a Craigslist ad for fear of it being a scam.

So, how much will an ad cost local employers on Bellingham Craigslist now?

At PR Consulting, we manage recruitment advertising for several companies. When they have new job openings, they call us. We write great ad copy and then post and manage their jobs online using a variety of tools, including Craigslist, WorkSource and Indeed.com.

This week, each of the ads we posted on Craigslist cost the employer $10 for a 30-day run. It’s no longer free advertising, but it’s very affordable.

Here’s what the ad-purchasing dashboard looks like inside Craigslist today. You’ll start the ad placement process the same way you always did, by selecting a category and adding a job description and photos.

We haven’t done this yet, but there apparently will be a $5 renewal fee if we want to bump each ad back up to the top of the job list in the days and weeks ahead, before the 30-day run expires.

Craigslist will publish your ad when the payment is approved, and then they’ll email you a receipt for your records. Not so bad, right?

Whether you’re an applicant or an employer, Craigslist has made significant changes, and those changes just might be a good thing for both sides of the hiring table.

And don’t worry; you can still sell your grandma’s couch for free. Merchandise ads do not appear to have been monetized.
