Some of the most important businesses in any community are often the ones you wouldn’t expect. They fill critical holes in the fabric of the community, but until you need them, you’re not even aware of them.

Northwest Adult Day Health & Wellness Center is one of those businesses.

Whatcom County, consistently one of the most desirable places to retire in the country, is home to a great number of older adults and others who need care and attention, such as those with long-term illnesses and disabilities.

NWADH fills a critical role in Whatcom County by providing two important services:

They offer specialized weekday programs that help our friends and neighbors maintain their independence, build their strength and live full, happy lives.

This video explains what NWADH does to help community members live as independently as possible for as long as possible:

NWADH also provides much-needed assistance to family caregivers, many of whom are stretched to the limit holding down full-time jobs and caring for their own children.

NWADH provides ongoing respite for caregivers when their loved ones are enrolled in the Monday through Friday program. They also offer Caregiver Connection meetings in Bellingham and Lynden — twice-monthly meetings where caregivers can learn powerful trips and strategies from experts and fellow caregivers.

Some Caregiver Connection meetings are an open forum at which caregivers can share with and encourage each other in the difficult but important challenge of providing care for a loved one.

A short sample of upcoming Caregiver Connection meetings includes:

  • Jodi Newcomer and Dawn Alex from Hospice House will drop by Jan. 10 to explain hospice care talk about available services in Whatcom County. They will also help attendees understand at what point someone may be ready to receive hospice care.
  • On Feb. 14, a special Valentine’s Day meeting will focus on celebrating the love that goes into caregiving. NWADH is inviting caregivers to bring the one they provide care to for an hour and a half of social time. Live music and snacks will be provided. This should be a fun time of socializing for both caregivers and care receivers.
  • On March 14, Aleen Warren, an RN who works at NWADH, will talk about nutrition and why maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for caregivers.
